As a hawks fan you cant really be upset by this... You just cleared 5.275 mill of cap space without paying ANYTHING against the cap or assets to do so. For Hossa i feel bad for him that his career is coming to an end and he had one hell of a career but this couldn't come at a better time for the Hawks.

The hawks would maximize the LTIR by being as close to Hossa AAV over the cap as possible before placing him on LTIR

Most of us would prefer Hossa on the ice than the cap space

It isnt the same as actually clearing the space. It still limits them. I guess in theory he could come back at some point as well

I believe teams have to be under the cap limit on opening day and that's when the LTIR can kick-in after that.

Maybe someone can confirm that for me?

Yea. But Hossa's on ice value is much greater than 5.25m . The team is much worse without Hossa.

We'll see if the Hawks wisely spend.

You cant afford him on the ice... without you trading away assets to move out other salaries you wouldnt be under the cap ceiling... Vegas is doing you a favor taking Kruger off you hands because they can take TVR without him

Let's all understand one thing about LTIR and the cap space it creates. LTIR doesnt directly create cap space as if Hossa were to be removed from Hawks payroll. The process allows a team to go OVER the cap by the amount of the LTIR.

Where this comes into play is a scenario where the hawks trade away meaningful salary (AA and Breadman, for instance) and get themselves, say, $4m under the cap. In that case, Hossa's LTIR is almost meaningless.

My point is that this new news might affect the Hawks strategy. Instead of getting under the cap, the goal would be more to get JUST under the cap.

You are correct, but as it stands today the hawks wouldnt be cap complaint... so LTIR limits would be the least of there concerns

Allergic to synthetic materials...latex, red dye? lol Hossa not wanting to play for only $1 million a year (or for a team that gets swept in the first round), realizes he can retire and play in Russia for a lot more money and perks.

This would be a classic Hossa move (money, cups, or bust) and really puts the screws to the Hawks who already with cap issues, have to replace a 26 goal scoring wing with only an extra $1 million for each of the next three years that Hossa's retirement will save them. Any high scoring snipers out there for $1 million? Let's hope the Hawks already have a plan in place with Vegas.

Sad day if true. So much fun to watch Hossa play 110% 2-way hockey every shift. What a lead-by-example for the whole team, especially the younger hawks. Sad day. Say it ain't so, Hoss.

I am not sure if they still have the opening day rule, but either way it can get worked around. All it means is that you will probably see some guys get sent to the AHL on paper for a day or called up to the NHL on paper, depending on how they spend the money.

So now who fits the bill as a "replacement".

On a side note, as a physician for nearly 20 years, I have seen the severe damage caused by medications to the human body. Please speak with your Doctors, Nurse Practitioners, or Physician's Assistants when taking any new med about the damage it may cause alone or when combined with other meds you may be taking.

This blog says that he is going on LTIR and not retiring. Does it have to be spelled out more for you? He isn't going to play in Russia

Its cap hit (5.25m) dumbass. Not actual salary . So actually the Blackhawks will "benefit" $5,250,000 . Hurts losing Hossa on the ice, that really can not be replaced.

losing 26 goals and 45 points and most importantly when he scored those goals. IMO nobody scored any more important goals than Hossa. 7 game winning goals last year tied for first with the guy some of the lesser lights around here want to dump. Now let's trade Anisimov and Panarin and go all out for the first draft pick because that is where this would be headed.
